How To Gain Access To Higher Paid Jobs
Everybody wants to earn more money, but how do get access to those high paying jobs?
Here are 5 ways to snag a job that pays more.
Get an education
Stats suggest you’re more likely to get a higher paying job with a degree. In fact, higher education can gain women a 28% pay boost. Some of the highest paying jobs are only accessible with an education (e.g. doctors, lawyers, engineers).
That said, there are still some high-paying careers that don’t require an education. Such as supervisor roles in marketing and HR and many digital careers such as programming (you’ll still need to show that you can code, but you don’t necessarily need a degree).
Niche degrees may be able to get you access to more niche roles that are higher paid (as this Library Science Degree article suggests). A general degree may still be able to get you a higher paid job, but you may stand out less among the many other people with that same degree.
Expand your skill set
Having a strong skill set behind you often gets you access to higher paid jobs.
Digital skills like programming, data analytics, and graphic design are currently some of the most in-demand and likely to get you a pay rise – this guide at CIO lists some more of these lucrative tech skills.
However, some general skills can also allow you access to higher paid jobs. Truck drivers, for example, can make a high salary.
In some trades, gaining extra skills could be a way of accessing higher paid positions. For example, you could add management skills to your existing skill set to unlock management positions in your industry.
Get the right experience
Having experience behind you also opens up doors to higher paid jobs.
The type of experience is important. If you’re trying to get a high paying job in the fashion industry, having fashion-related experience is obviously important.
And it’s especially impressive if you have experience working for a large and established company. These big companies look great on a CV as employers will instantly recognize the name and will assume that you’ve got valuable experience and knowledge behind you.
Getting experience at these big companies isn’t always as difficult as people believe – big companies tend to hire huge teams of staff and often have more entry-level positions. You may even be able to intern for one of these companies and secure some experience this way.
Take on more responsibility
Taking on more responsibility is another way to earn more.
Management roles are often some of the highest paid because you’re not just in charge of your own work, but the work of others too. Such roles often involve gaining leadership skills – you may be able to get a promotion at your current workplace or you may be able to lead a club in your free time, which could demonstrate these skills.
Taking on more risk can also earn you more. It’s for this reason that careers such as air traffic control, oil platform work, and building surveying are so well paid.
Get noticed in your field
Making a name for yourself in your field can also gain you access to higher paid jobs by giving you more credibility.
Building lots of connections can often make you a valuable candidate. This can be achieved by visiting lots of networking events in order to meet key people in your trade or by building connections via sites like LinkedIn.
Getting in the media can also be great for your career. This may involve working on a project for a company that is likely to get media attention such as a charity fundraising event or working with a high profile client.
You can also do your own entrepreneurial reputation building which could involve starting a blog, starting a YouTube channel or freelancing within your trade in order to build a name for yourself.
Adding just 1 of these 5 suggestions to your career could launch you to the next income level. So don’t wait; get out there and earn!
